MARINE POLLUTION AND SHIP WASTE DISCHARGE

Generally, marine wastewater is composed of both toxic and non-toxic organic and inorganic contaminants, micro and macro suspended solid contaminants comprising cellulose, sand, grit, human waste/excreta emulsions and gases. Sewage high in BOD can deplete oxygen in receiving waters, causing fish kills and ecosystem damaging. Discharge of bacterial contaminants and suspended solids called pollutants or contaminants(sewage) from point sources contaminates and pollutes the seawater / marine environment and are prohibited unless a permit has been obtained. So marine wastes / marine wastewater must be treated before discharges from vessel, complying with regulations / guidelines laid by the Marine Protection Committee (MEPC) of the INTERNATIONAL MARITIME ORGANISATION (IMO).

SEWAGE TREATMENT SYSTEM FOR TREATING MARINE WASTES & MARINE WASTEWATER (MWTS)
TiTaNs’ RT Pure™-M Marine Sewage Treatment System comprises wastewater collection tank, where wastewater slurry is pumped into it. The wastewater slurry is routed by a macerator pump for maceration of the suspended solid particles, resulting in smaller sized particles.
Macerated slurry mixed with seawater then pumped into electrolytic cell which oxidizes and disinfects using seawater and applied DC current. The electrochemical reaction results in production of oxidants which kills harmful coliform bacteria and oxidize the organic compounds in the macerated slurry. Followed by flocculation process inside the electrocoagulation cell, the slurry is routed to clarifying tank to facilitate further separation of the sludge which is precipitated at the bottom of the tanks. The treated effluent is discharged into the sea and the precipitated / compacted sludge is separated for disposal as per IMO guidelines.
